Sri Lanka

January 30, 2012

Having time out in Sri Lanka was just what I needed to get my mind and body ready before I commenced my Masters program at University.  It had been a couple of years since I had packed my favourite backpack and taken in the scents of different culture.  If I am really honest, I hadn't even considered Sri Lanka until a travel agent suggested it as an affordable option.  I felt a little foolish not haveing thought of it myself, I mean,,,,Sri Lanka.  It has everything I love about travel.

Being located south of India, it also made it very accessible from Australia for flights.  So after a quick search on the old interwebs, I had booked my flight and was ready to go.  I decided to make this trip more luxurious that my usual travel.  I was only going to be travelling for a couple of weeks, so I wanted to optimise my time, see as much as I could and manage a little rest and recovery at the same time.  So I arranged a driver to take me around and upgraded to hotels.  I know.....this is so not how I usually travel.

When I arrived in Colombo airport and I had my driver, Rajesh,  waiting there to greet me, I knew I had made the right decision.  Like a superstar, he figured out that I might be hungry and took me to his favourite local eatery.  You know what....Sri Lankan food is the best.  This first stop started a long love affair with Sri Lankan food for me.  Fresh seafood curries, exotic fruit desserts, and my favourite avocado lassi.

My short stay vacation took me through Kandy, Galle and Hikkaduwa.  While I loved the historical and cultural depth of Kandy, my facourite part was the south west coast.   I spread my time between people watching in the fortified township of Galle, eating sushi and drink cold beer in Unawatuna and soaking up the sun on the white sandy beach in Hikkaduwa.  I even managed to go hot air ballooning at sunrise,

While I was only there for a couple of weeks, I am pretty confident I left a piece of my heart in Sri Lanka.
